What We Do
Farm Animal Welfare
Animal Nepal’s Farm Animal Welfare Program focuses on improving the welfare of buffaloes and other farm animals, with particular attention to the severe suffering associated with live animal transportation.
Animals often endure long, stressful journeys to slaughterhouses, frequently without adequate space, food, water, or rest. Our team works across key transport corridors in Kathmandu, Chitwan, and Bara, where we monitor live animal transport and carry out inspections of trucks to assess and document welfare conditions.
We systematically record, compile, and report evidence of violations to the relevant authorities, helping to ensure accountability and encouraging consistent enforcement of existing welfare standards. This process also supports stronger institutional response and helps build a culture of routine action against non-compliance.
Alongside field monitoring, the program advocates for an end to live animal transportation and opposes the expansion of factory farming systems that intensify and normalize large-scale animal suffering. We envision a food system that moves away from high-intensity confinement and long-distance transport, toward more humane and responsible practices that significantly reduce preventable suffering.
Through a combination of oversight, reporting, and advocacy, we aim to reduce suffering and drive lasting improvements in farm animal welfare across Nepal.
