Equine Welfare Project

Animal Nepal was the first organization in Nepal to provide direct care, rescue, and advocacy for working equines. Over the past 17 years, we have remained committed to improving the welfare of donkeys, mules, and horses who play a vital role in Nepal’s economy and communities.

Working equines are essential across sectors ranging from construction to tourism. With this in mind, our work extends from brick kilns to remote mountain regions, alongside ongoing efforts to strengthen welfare standards and promote better treatment for these hardworking animals.

Our programs include needs-based veterinary treatment, preventive care, and welfare training for owners and handlers. We also support capacity-building for local veterinary service providers, helping to improve long-term care at the community level.

We work closely with the Government of Nepal to support the control of infectious diseases, particularly zoonotic diseases such as rabies and glanders. After years of Animal Nepal’s field experience and sustained advocacy following repeated exposure in working equines, glanders was officially recognized in Nepal in 2020 by the Government of Nepal and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

In addition, Animal Nepal operates the country’s only equine sanctuary, providing lifelong refuge and care for injured, abandoned, and vulnerable equines who can no longer work or be safely rehomed.
