Cage Free Hen

Animal Nepal’s Cage-Free Hen Program promotes humane and ethical practices within the chicken and egg production industry in Nepal. The program advocates for cage-free systems of keeping layer hens, offering a significantly more welfare-friendly alternative to the intensive confinement of battery cages.

Battery cage systems severely restrict natural behaviors, preventing hens from walking, stretching their wings, nesting, or engaging in basic social and comfort behaviors. This leads to prolonged physical and psychological suffering for millions of birds. Cage-free systems, by contrast, allow greater movement and the expression of natural behaviours, resulting in improved welfare outcomes.

Through farm inspections, welfare monitoring, documentation, and evidence gathering, our team assesses on-ground conditions and encourages better compliance with animal welfare standards. Alongside this, we engage directly with farmers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to support a practical and humane transition toward cage-free production systems.

At its core, this program is about improving the lives of of hens by addressing one of the most widespread yet often overlooked forms of industrial animal suffering. By promoting cage-free practices, we aim to shift the sector toward systems that are more humane, more sustainable, and increasingly aligned with global welfare expectations.

Ultimately, the Cage-Free Hen Program seeks to reduce suffering at scale while advancing a more compassionate and responsible future for farmed birds in Nepal.
