What We Do

Companion Animals Program

Animal Nepal’s Companion Animals Program is dedicated to reducing preventable suffering among dogs and cats by improving their welfare, health, and management across communities in Nepal. At its core, our work focuses on humane population control, rabies prevention, and access to essential veterinary care through Animal Birth Control (ABC), vaccination, and needs-based treatment.

We work extensively with street and community animals through a combination of rescue, treatment, rehabilitation, and rehoming. Our Dog Treatment Center in Chobhar provides medical care and recovery support for vulnerable animals, while our Mobile Response Treatment (MRT) Service extends on-site veterinary care to street dogs and cats in Kirtipur, Lalitpur, and Godawari, ensuring timely intervention within communities.

Rabies prevention and population management remain central to our mission. We maintain an active presence in Kirtipur, Lalitpur, Godawari, Lumbini, Mahagadhimai, Gorkha, and other regions across Nepal, working closely with local authorities to support humane and effective control strategies.

In addition to direct intervention, we run school education programs and community awareness campaigns to promote compassion, responsible care, and a long-term shift in how companion animals are perceived and treated. We also collaborate closely with government bodies, particularly on rabies prevention and population management initiatives.

Beyond field programs, Animal Nepal provides shelter for vulnerable dogs, promotes adoption, and works to improve the overall status of companion animals through sustained advocacy and outreach. Our research has also examined Nepal’s unregulated dog breeding and sales industry, highlighting the significant welfare concerns and preventable suffering it causes for both dogs and cats.

Through this integrated approach—combining direct intervention, prevention, education, and advocacy—we aim to create lasting, systemic change for companion animals across Nepal.
